So you want to Breed a Female?
This page will help you learn the process. It should be your number one concern to improve the breed and follow as closely as possible to AKC standards.
First of all you want to make sure your female has had a vet exam, she needs to be healthy, and have had at least 1 heat cycle previous to this heat cycle. She needs to be mature enough to care for puppies and dogs that are breed on their first heat cycle are not prepared to do that. You also need to make sure she is free from disease, and carries no genetic defects which can be passed on to her puppies.
Once she has passed a vet’s exam and cleared for breeding you will watch for her heat cycle to begin. Most Yorkshire terriers have a heat cycle spaced between 6 and 9 months apart. The heat cycle has three stages we are concerned about. There is technically another stage Aneterus, which is what the phase is called between heats.
the first stage of heat called During Proestrus she will not be receptive to the male, she may have some bleeding, her vulva will become swollen, and she will sometimes become aggressive towards other animals and act moody. She will be licking herself a lot so it is important to check her with a white tissue a couple times a day when you expect her coming into heat. Once you see the blood on the tissue you need to call me at (909) 910-1457 and schedule a time for the first breeding. During the next nine days the follicles containing the eggs mature.
The second phase of the heat cycle is called Esterus. This is usually around day 10 from the first sight of blood. This is when she will become receptive to the male, she will begin flagging. (Flagging is a term used by breeders when the female will move her tail to the side, and put her rump in the air to allow the male to mount her. You can check if she is flagging by placing your hand on her lower back and rub towards her tail, if she lifts her rear end and moves aside her tail she is flagging.) Her blood will have slowed down or stopped, the color is now more of a discharge straw or pink color. She needs to be breed during this phase. I start on day 10, and get a breeding in on days 10, 12, 14,16. By waiting every other day this allows for sperm to replenish. It is important to keep other males away from your female to prevent an accidental breeding!
The last stage of the heat is called Materus. This is when she will again be no longer receptive to the male. The fertilized eggs can take up to a week to reach the uterine wall.
How Stud Services Work.
I prefer the female to come to my home around day 9 and stay with me for a week. Or you can bring her every other day If you can only come once please be certain of the days you saw blood and we will breed her on day 12 or 13. One tie is all that is necessary if you time it just right. The reason the female should come & stay with us is so that they get comfortable with each other. I can personally get the dogs together and help them achieve a tie if nesscesary (A tie is when the swelling and contraction of the sphincter muscles of the female’s vulva locks or ties the dogs into position while the sperm pumps into the female.) I do not leave breeding to chance and leave them in a kennel all day. I guarantee pregnancy or you get either a partial refund or the next breeding is FREE! My male has a 100% success rate!
I usually can’t tell if my females are pregnant until several weeks after the breeding. You may notice some or all of the following signs in your female.
Nipples become hard and more pronounced, change in temperament such as laying around a lot, some dogs experience morning sickness a few weeks after breeding and may throw up a little. I offer saltine crackers to help settle her stomach.
By 5 weeks your vet can perform an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy if you choose.
Between 5-6 weeks you will start to see her abdomen getting larger. You will also be able to feel little golf balls in the abdomen after 5 weeks.
By the 8th week of pregnancy you can get an X-ray of the abdomen to see the sizes of the little puppies and how many are in your female. I recommend doing this so that if a c-section is required you can plan on when and where it will be performed. It also lets you know if mom has had 2 puppies and is still acting funny, maybe she has another pup that needs to be birthed.
